Everyone has heard of hybrids these days, but although some people have gone out and bought them, others still don’t know enough about them to judge if they’re a good buy or not.
So, how does a hybrid work and how does this make it environmentally friendly? Put simply, the hybrid car uses two sources of power, instead of just the conventional petrol or diesel engine. The hybrid powertrain includes a small internal combustion engine that is assisted by an electric motor. The electric motor is powered by its own battery – increasingly a lithium-ion one as they are lighter and smaller than the batteries made of metal-nickel-hydride, so they reduce the weight of the car (and the energy required to propel it).
